John Marston is a former outlaw looking for an all new life in 1911 America. It wasn't until the 1920s that the Wild West would become a famous and popular icon in American history and culture. It was inevitable, as more and more people poured in from the east, that every part of the American West would be populated.

Being so far away from modern America gave the West a sense of self-reliance, independence and order which would have difficulty complying with the Federal Government. Players can see the frustration many characters have with the Federal Government and eastern folk. Some people have a hard time accepting this new lifestyle, and many are willing to fight to preserve their way of life. Even Marshal Leigh Johnson is seen fussing with a telephone in one of his mission cutscenes, showing the unfamiliarity with such technology people of his generation and likeness have. Electric line poles are also noticeable along roads. The town of Blackwater has noticeable modernized differences in architecture and technology compared to other gritty towns like Armadillo and Thieves' Landing. As players see in the opening of the game, many new and 'unfamiliar' people are moving into the West on the train. The game takes place in 1911, which is near the end of the seventy-year span of the Western American Frontier (also known as the Wild West). A successor game and a prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, was released on October 26, 2018. Its success led to the development of several DLC´s, including a new single-player campaign in Undead Nightmare. It was praised for its story, thematic depth, presentation, visuals, open world setting, and gameplay mechanics and as of 2013, has shipped over 13 million copies worldwide.įollowing its release, Redemption received multiple end-year accolades and was considered one of the best games of 2010. Taking place in a wide open-ended environment featuring western parts of the American countryside and northern areas of Mexico, Redemption is presented through a third-person perspective.

Sad tales, surprises, and secrets lurk off Eastward's beaten paths and there's always some kind of reward for being nosy – even if they don't always feel like a pleasant gift.America, early 1900's. Every place you encounter has little details that also make it unique, encouraging you to dive into every alley and cave to see what you can find. Their designs are so memorable too, with developer Pixpil's stunning art style adding unique elements to every single person you meet, from the jester-like Jasper to the simian robot Daniel. Even if your time with these characters is brief before moving on, there's a depth to their presentation that's unexpected and utterly absorbing. Through meticulously crafted underground dwellings to cities and the countryside between them, you'll meet a whole entourage of loveable rogues that will touch John and Sam's lives in various ways.

As you're forcibly evicted from the starting area, you'll keep traveling east, initially – as I mentioned – with no goal beyond finding somewhere to lay your head. The game has a limited crew of permanent fixtures, with the story instead letting you get attached to the oddities and other creatures you'll meet on your travels literally eastward. What carries the game all the way through though are Eastward's characters.
